Hash 101: Types of Hash and How it’s Made
Hashish, also known as hash, is a concentrated cannabis product made by separating trichomes (tiny resin glands) from the cannabis plant material and then compressing and heating them into a solid block or ball.
There are several different types of hashish, which vary in their texture, colour, and potency. We’re going to look at some common types of hash and how each one is made.
Dry Sift Hash
Dry sift hash is a type of cannabis concentrate made by using a series of screens to separate the trichomes from the rest of the cannabis plant material. The resulting product is a potent, highly concentrated form of cannabis that is typically used for smoking or vaporizing.
To make dry sift hash, the cannabis plant material is first frozen to make it brittle and easier to separate the trichomes from the plant material. The frozen cannabis is then sifted through a series of screens with progressively smaller mesh sizes, which separates the trichomes from the plant material.
The trichomes are then collected and pressed together to form a solid mass of hashish. The final product is usually a light brown or yellowish colour, with a texture that ranges from crumbly to sticky, depending on the quality of the sift and the amount of heat and pressure applied during the pressing process.
Bubble Hash
Bubble hash is a type of cannabis concentrate made by using ice water to separate the trichomes from the plant material. It is called “bubble hash” because the final product resembles small bubbles.
To make bubble hash, cannabis plant material is first placed in a bucket of ice water, which makes the trichomes brittle and easier to separate. The mixture is then agitated with a stirring device, which causes the trichomes to fall off the plant material and mix with the water.
The mixture is then passed through a series of screens with progressively smaller mesh sizes, which separates the trichomes from the water and plant material. The resulting product is a fine powder or resin that is then pressed together to form a solid mass of hashish.
The final product can range in colour from light yellow to dark brown, depending on the quality of the starting material and the extraction process. Bubble hash is typically smoked or vaporized, and it is known for its potency and flavorful aroma.
Charas Hash
Charas hash is a type of cannabis concentrate that is traditionally produced by hand-rubbing cannabis plants to extract the resin. It is commonly produced in the Himalayas, particularly in India and Nepal, and is known for its strong psychoactive effects and distinct aroma.
To make charas hash, a person gently rubs their hands over the surface of cannabis plants, collecting the resin that sticks to their hands. The resin is then rolled into a ball or stick, which can be smoked or vaporized.
The process of hand-rubbing cannabis plants to produce charas hash requires a great deal of skill and patience, as the resin must be carefully collected without damaging the plant material. The resulting product is typically dark brown or black in colour, with a sticky texture and a strong, pungent aroma.
